Melbourne Welcomes New Singapore Airlines A380

Minister for Tourism Louise Asher today welcomed Singapore Airlines’ second daily A380 Melbourne-Singapore service, which will add 70,000 seats each year to the important air route.
Ms. Asher said the Victorian Coalition Government was very pleased to see Singapore Airlines demonstrate further confidence in Melbourne with this commitment, which will lead to increased business, trade and tourism opportunities between the two cities.
“Singapore Airlines is an important partner for Victoria, not only through its flagship carrier, but through its low-cost airline, Tiger Airways, that recently announced an increase of 70 jobs at their Melbourne hub.”
Ms. Asher said the Coalition Government also recently invested $50 Million into its International Engagement Strategy which will focus on creating new export market opportunities for Victorian businesses across key markets in Asia.
“Singapore Airlines’ strong route network into India and China also plays a critical role in Victoria’s plans to accelerate investment in these countries which are forecast to grow by 7.2 % and 7.6 % respectively until 2020/21. Singapore is also Victoria’s fifth largest source market with many visitors returning to undertake business, leisure or education.”
The announcement of Singapore Airlines’ second A380 joins the airline’s daily 777-300 service and also follows Emirates Airways decision to launch its first A380 to Melbourne later this year.
Ms. Asher said that continually improving aviation capacity is critical for Victoria to attract more international visitors.
“That’s why the Coalition Government committed $2.6 Million over four years in the recent State Budget, to attract new and maintain existing air services from priority international markets.” Ms. Asher said.
Ms. Asher said the Coalition Government, through Tourism Victoria, has an established relationship with Singapore Airlines.
“Tourism Victoria and Singapore Airlines undertake a range of collaborative marketing activities to attract visitors to Victoria not only from Singapore but also target markets such as the UK, Europe, Japan, China and India.” Ms. Asher said.
