Armed Robberies Up, Libs Will Act

Victor P Taffa

Gun-related crime is becoming a major issue in Tasmania and only the Liberals have a plan to tackle this growing problem, Shadow Minister for Police Elise Archer said.

“Crime statistics released yesterday by the ABS show that armed robberies have increased by 48 %. It’s time Police Minister David O’Byrne woke up to the problem and realised his savage budget cuts are having a massive impact on public safety.”

“The thin blue line is stretched to breaking point and Mr. O’Byrne needs to act, rather than putting up lame excuses.” Ms. Archer said.

“We can’t turn a blind eye to this problem.  That’s why the Liberals have a plan to establish a Serious and Organised Crime Squad consisting of 14 dedicated and specialised personnel to tackle major crime issues in Tasmania.”

“We will invest an additional $7.2 Million over four years to properly resource this unit, which will incorporate a re-established Cold Case Unit which was also axed by the Labor-Green Government.”

“The Hospitality Association supports our plan, the Police Association supports our plan and the community is crying out for action.  It’s time Mr. O’Byrne accepts he’s got it wrong and supports our plan too.” Ms. Archer said.
