Forestry Study Shows That Disastrous Deal Will Cost At Least 400 Jobs, Should Be Final Nail In The Coffin!

The socio-economic report released today should be the final nail in the coffin of the disastrous forestry deal, Shadow Minister for Forestry Peter Gutwein said.
“The report confirms that at least 400 jobs will be lost as a result of the disastrous Forest Deal, if it is implemented.”
“It shows that the North East, which has already taken most of the weight of forestry job closures, will bear over half of these losses, while the South will also lose more than 100 jobs. The evidence could not be clearer, and the job-destroying Forest Deal should now be thrown out.” Mr. Gutwein said.
“The Government’s dishonest spin about this report shows just how desperate they have become, and to what lengths they will go to try and deceive Tasmanians.”
“Not only is the “option 2” they use as a starting point patently absurd because it is premised upon effectively locking up 572,000 ha of forest even if the Deal fails (p14*), the author of the report explicitly says such a comparison should not be made “It does not and is not intended to compare scenario 1 with scenario 2” (p15).” Mr. Gutwein said.
*Scenario 2 incorporates logs only being harvested from outside the 572,000 ha of forests identified by the ENGOs and requiring protection.”
