Girl Killed, Four Others Injured Following Crash – Muswellbrook

A girl has died and four other people injured following a fatal crash on the New England Highway at Muswellbrook last night.

About 9:20 pm, a white Ford Focus was travelling north on the New England Highway approaching the intersection with Milperra Drive when it collided with the front side of a Kenworth prime mover travelling in the opposite direction.

As a result of the crash, the car spun out of control before coming to a stop on the highway.

The driver of the car, a 44-year-old woman from Dungog and one of her passengers, a 10-year-old girl were both seriously injured in the crash and flown by Westpac Helicopter to John Hunter Hospital.

The 10-year-old girl died at hospital early this morning while the woman underwent emergency surgery suffering from head and chest injuries and is listed as being in a critical condition.

Three other children, a 7-year-old boy and two girls aged 11 and 12, also passengers in the car, were taken by ambulance to  John Hunter Hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

The truck driver, a 48-year-old Kootingal man, escaped injury during the crash and was taken by Police to Singleton Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

Police from Newcastle City Crash Investigation Unit are continuing their investigations into the cause of the crash and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
