The David Wirrpanda Foundation is set to expand its operations to the Peel Region thanks to a $120,000 funding boost over two years from the State Government, Health Minister Kim Hames said today.

Dr. Hames said the new funding would allow its programs to expand from its successful base in the Pilbara, Armadale and Narrogin to the Peel Region to reach a new cohort of young Aboriginal people.

The funding will allow three of the foundations key programs to be rolled out to four local schools and the Peel Football Club. It will be matched with funding from Healthway’s Community Alcohol Project Grant.

The Programs include the Troy Cook Health and Fitness Program, the ‘Dare to Dream’ Girls Program and the ‘On My Way’ Leadership Program.

Dr. Hames said the outcomes from the programs run by the foundation had been outstanding and was aligned with the State Government’s approach to closing the gap of life expectancy for Western Australia’s indigenous people.

“This funding will pay for mentors, a program co-ordinator and resource materials and equipment to get these three programs running in schools and clubs in the Peel Region.” Dr. Hames said.

“Many of us have long admired the work of the Wirrpanda Foundation which has raised awareness about the dangers of smoking, risky drinking, diet and obesity.”

“I am proud the Government has been able to support David Wirrpanda, Troy Cook and their team to expand the work of the foundation to the Peel Region.” Dr. Hames said.

The four schools to be included in the Program include the Coodanup and Warnbro Community Colleges, Pinjarra Senior High School and Mandurah College.

Foundation Role Model David Wirrpanda said he was enthusiastic about bringing the words of the foundation to Peel.

“Regional visits are always great but this will mean the foundation services are where they are needed most. I have met some great kids through the foundation and if I can help them just that little bit, I will be able to sleep each night.” Mr. Wirrpanda said.
