Young People across Western Australia will this year share in more than $72,000 in grants to help celebrate National Youth Week from April 1-10.

Minister for Youth Robyn McSweeney said 77 organisations will receive grants to fund events and activities during National Youth Week to reflect this year’s theme ‘Own It’.

“This year a range of events and activities will be planned and run by young West Australians to help celebrate the achievements and positive impacts young people have on their local communities.” Mrs. McSweeney said.

“It is the biggest annual celebration developed by young people, for young people, involving thousands of events, concerts, competitions and fun ways for our youth to engage with their communities and showcase what they can do.”

“Young people can look forward to activities such as film-making workshops; dance and film making competitions; urban art workshops; and activities that encourage confidence and team building.” Mrs. McSweeney said.

Other events include;

  • Fremantle Police and Community Youth Centre will conduct a ‘Zumba Dance-a-thon’ for local Aboriginal and disadvantaged youth;
  • Shire of Manjimup will carry out ‘Sk8 M8’s (Skate Mates)’, involving a skate park tour between three towns within the district;
  • Shire of Nannup will have a guest speaker invited to talk to local young people about the dangers of speed, alcohol, drugs and fatigue when driving;
  • Karalundi Aboriginal Education Community will run a ‘Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds Triathlon’ involving a swim, run and bicycle ride; and a movie screening.

The Minister also said a national website had been developed to promote this year’s National Youth Week events, activities and competitions to help young people to promote and get involved in their local events.

National Youth Week 2011 is the twelfth year the National Celebration for young people will be run.
