West Australian Receives Top Military Honour

Premier Colin Barnett today congratulated West Australian Corporal Benjamin Roberts-Smith on his receipt of the Victoria Cross.

“The Victoria Cross is Australia’s Highest Military Honour and I am sure all West Australians will join me in congratulating Corporal Roberts-Smith on this distinction, his bravery and dedication to our country.” Premier Barnett said.

“Western Australia is the proud home to the Special Air Service Regiment and I am delighted that one of its sons has been recognised in such an outstanding way.”

“Hearing the story of Corporal Roberts-Smith’s actions on June 11, 2010 which earned him this honour, fill you with an immense feeling of gratitude and pride.”

“He knowingly put his life in danger to protect those of his team mates which is the core of the Australian spirit.” Premier Barnett said.

The Premier joined the Governor-General Ms. Quentin Bryce; Governor of Western Australia Ken Michael; Prime Minister Julia Gillard; Leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott; and Chief of the Defence Force Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston at the investiture ceremony at Campbell Barracks in Swanbourne this morning.
