WA Health Able To Proceed With All Elective Surgery For Next Week

Independent Umpire Orders End To Work Bans

The WA Industrial Relations Commission tonight ruled that United Voice formerly the Liquor and Hospitality Miscellaneous Workers Union must stop its hospital work bans immediately.

The decision follows yesterday’s ruling which rejected the union’s argument that the State Government was prevented from negotiating with Serco because of the terms of an earlier enterprise bargaining agreement.

The commission found the agreement had no application to Fiona Stanley Hospital or Midland Health Campus.

Health Minister Kim Hames said he was pleased with the Commission’s ruling.

“The stopping of the unwarranted work bans means WA Health will be able to proceed with all hospital elective surgery that was planned for next week.” Dr. Hames said.

The Minister said the industrial action was never warranted because there were no plans to contract out any services at existing Western Australian Public Hospitals and, as a result, no existing permanent employee was at risk of losing their job.
