Building For The Future

Saturday 28 March 2015 New South Wales Election

Victor P Taffa has a 5 Point Plan For Sydney at the 28 March 2015 New South Wales Election and Point 4 is for Wynyard Railway Station Platforms 1 & 2 to be used for Heavy Rail Trains and that the Car Park be moved to the Barangaroo area.

This plan has been submitted to the New South Wales Transport and Planning Departments.

Wynyard Railway Station Platforms are at capacity in Peak Hour at present.  Both for staff and passengers this is a matter of public safety and as such Platforms 1 & 2 are needed to be used for Trains to alleviate congestion and plan for the future.

Platforms 1 & 2 were always intended to be used for Heavy Rail Trains for a Railway from the Northern Beaches that continued to the South East.

On 19 March 1932 there were 4 Railway Tracks and 6 Road Lanes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Western side Tracks serves the North Shore Line. The Eastern side Tracks were to serve a Northern Beaches Railway. A Northern Beaches Railway was scrapped due to a lack of funds and so the Tramway Department won the battle to utilise the Eastern side Tracks for Tram services. These Tracks dived into tunnels and arrived at Platforms 1 & 2 that were located above Platforms 3 & 4.

In 1958 Tram services to the Lower North Shore ended and Platforms 1 & 2 became a Car Park, a situation that exists today.

When the ‘Hungry Mile’ wharves became the Barangaroo Development Victor lodged an EIS Submission on 2 September 2010 with the Lend Lease Barangaroo South EIS for the Car Park at Wynyard Railway Station Platforms 1 & 2 to be relocated to Barangaroo South and Platforms 1 & 2 to be used for Heavy Rail Trains.

The Sydney CBD has a Sydney CBD South Car Park at Goulburn Street and a Sydney CBD East Car Park at the Domain. The Car Park at the Barangaroo area would service Sydney CBD North and West and easily accessed from the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Some people wish to rid the Sydney CBD of cars. Victor supports Heavy and Light Rail Expansion and Improvements but realistically the chances of ridding the Sydney CBD of cars are nil.

The costs involved to build Platforms 1 & 2 for the use of Trains are about $3 Million. As 1958 contract for the Car Park would have expired, the cost of moving the Car Park would not incur compensation. Barangaroo will need adequate Car Park facilities and the Wynyard Car Park Operators are well placed to take advantage of this once-in-a lifetime opportunity.

Barangaroo is far from being completed and as such can factor in additional Car Park needs.
