The Northern Territory’s largest electricity generator Territory Generation has worked with Power and Water’s System Control to set a reliability record in the Darwin and Katherine electricity system.

“The Darwin and Katherine system has now operated for 293 days without a power outage caused by a single generator failure.” Minister for Essential Services Peter Chandler said.

“This is a signal that electricity reforms introduced by the Country Liberals Government are working and are delivering benefits for Territorians.” Minister Chandler said.

Through system analysis of power generation and transmission, Territory Generation and Power and Water have built increased resilience into the system to ensure sustained electricity delivery to customers.

“A few years ago the system was struggling to compensate from a drop in electricity supply, which would give rise to an Under Frequency Load Shed (power outages); basically the system was protecting itself.” Minister Chandler said.

Territory Generation Chief Executive Tim Duignan said the Darwin and Katherine system is now better able to cater for generation drops.

“Territory Generation and Power and Water Corporation have built more resilience into the system by adjusting system operating parameters and changing the amount of redundant supply we have in the system.” Mr. Duignan said.

“Ultimately the work has reduced the number and severity of outages across the Darwin and Katherine region, giving businesses and residents increased confidence in their electricity supply.”

“Territory Generation will continue to work closely with Power and Water’s System Control to improve network reliability across the Northern Territory. I expect to see further efficiency improvements, as System Control continues to focus on the development of market mechanisms including economic dispatch, and clarity of ancillary services and related cost implications.” Mr. Duignan said.

Member for Katherine Willem Westra van Holthe said he was very happy with the evolving reliability of power delivery from Territory Generation to keep the people of Katherine connected.

“The Northern Territory is home to some of the most extreme weather events in the country; it’s vitally important that our service providers like Territory Generation are doing their bit to provide reliable and consistent services.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.

“The Northern Territory Government has a plan to build the infrastructure the Territory needs now and into the future.” Minister Chandler said.

“We are delivering on better services in the power industry to ensure reliable power supply for Territorians.”
