Acting Premier and Leader of The Nationals, Peter Ryan, today celebrated the first Melbourne-bound container of grain, at the upgraded Iron Horse Intermodal Rail Transport Hub at Merbein.

Speaking from the Grain-Packing facility at Merbein, Mr Ryan said the new infrastructure at the hub would reduce the cost and improve the reliability of supply chains, optimising infrastructure and managing any adverse impacts of freight operations on the environment.

“Up until now, the facility had not been used, due to the wet weather and delays in local grain harvest, but it’s wonderful to see and be a part of the beginning of production.” Mr. Ryan said.

Mr. Ryan said the new $1.7 Million Grain packing facility was an additional service offered by Iron Horse Intermodal Pty Ltd, as part of the Wakefield Group of Companies.

“The Mallee Wheat Belt Region of North-West Victoria is renowned for producing premium malting barley and prime hard wheat, and these are commodities highly sought after in the export market, especially Asia and the Middle East.” Mr. Ryan said.

“This newly upgraded hub will operate more efficiently in providing a better service to Victoria’s North-West, the Riverland district of South Australia and South-West New South Wales.”

“The local community, industry and businesses have all supported the recent upgrade of the Iron Horse Intermodal Terminal and can now celebrate the fruits of their efforts.”

“The Victorian Government has invested almost $800,000 towards the project.” Mr. Ryan said.

Mr. Ryan said the new containerised grain-packing facility operated as an open-door service, with low or no barriers of entry, making it perfect for grain buyers and producers.

“With the new infrastructure in place, we will now see the improvements in the services offered by Iron Horse to new and existing businesses, as well as facilitating efficient movement of freight in Victoria, including the State’s Ports.” Mr. Ryan said.
