High Prices Hit Housing Sales

Darwin’s Spiralling House Prices have helped bring housing sales to a shuddering halt.

Shadow Treasurer Willem Westra van Holthe said the latest figures from real estate analyst RP Data shows Darwin reported the country’s sharpest house sale decline during 2010.

“There were declines across all capital cities, but the 30.3% drop in Darwin was the largest.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.

“In 2010, there were 2,089 dwelling sales in Darwin, 861 less than the previous year and almost 500 fewer than in 2000.”

“The figures show how the Government’s failure to release enough land to meet demand has rebounded on ordinary Territorians.”

“The Territory’s house prices are at record levels, out of reach for many families and workers.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.

“The flow of people leaving the Territory for interstate will have also played a part in the decline.”

“The Government lacked the vision to release enough land to meet housing demand.”

“Instead, a succession of Ministers and Chief Ministers released media statements as a substitute for releasing blocks of land for residential construction.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.
