$8.7 Million Upgrade For Travancore Tramline

Victor P Taffa

Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder today announced an $8.7 Million project to improve the reliability and efficiency of tram route 59 through Travancore.

“The Victorian Coalition Government is investing $8.7 Million on the tram route along Mt. Alexander Road at Travancore to improve safety and travel times for all road and tram users.” Mr. Mulder said.

“Works will include upgrading a 500 metre section of the tram track to separate vehicles and trams, constructing a new platform tram stop and strengthening the bridge over Moonee Ponds Creek.”

Mr. Mulder said VicRoads has been working closely with Moonee Valley Council, the Department of Transport and Yarra Trams to improve safety, tram travel times and tram accessibility at this location.

“It currently takes trams about six minutes to travel this short distance as they share the road space with other traffic heading into the city during the busy morning peak.” Mr. Mulder said.

“These works will cut approximately 5 minutes from tram travel times in the morning peak, helping commuters get to their destination on time.”

Mr. Mulder said the works will include:

  • Widening of Mt. Alexander Road at Debney Park to provide a separate space for trams;
  • Improved signal priority for trams;
  • New platform tram stops at the Flemington Community Centre;
  • Improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities;
  • New tram tracks.

Work on the Travancore project will start in October 2011 and is expected to be completed by April 2012. The local community and driving public will be notified well in advance of the works commencing.
