Construction on a $6.6 Million expansion and refurbishment of The Townsville Hospital’s children’s ward begins today.

The first sod will be turned this morning on the Palaszczuk Government funded project that will provide additional beds, a new school, extra amenities and play space.

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said Hutchinson’s Builders were the successful tenderer for the project which is expected to be completed in the second half of 2017.

“Today is an exciting and important day with this project to deliver North Queenslanders an expanded, modern and vibrated children’s ward to provide world-class tertiary care to north Queenslanders.” Deputy Trad said.

“This vital project is funded through our government’s $180 Million Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program (SRIPP) and will be completed on two stages to enable to ward to remain operational.”

The first stage will include the establishment of the additional beds and construction of the annex while the second stage will see the refurbishment of the existing ward.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick said the project would mean more sick children in North Queensland would receive the treatment they need in an improved hospital space.
