Attorney General Announces Three New Judicial Appointments

  • Appointments become effective from February 12, 2018

Attorney General John Quigley has announced the appointment of Wendy Gillan as a judge of the District Court of Western Australia and Gail Sutherland as a judge of the Family Court of Western Australia.

Ms. Gillan’s appointment will fill the vacancy left by the retirement of His Honour Judge Phillip Eaton, while Ms. Sutherland’s appointment will fill a vacancy left by the retirement of the Honourable Justice John Walters.

Leonie Forrest has been appointed as an acting magistrate of the Family Court of Western Australia until October 1, 2018.

Wendy Gillan

Ms. Gillan graduated from The University of Western Australia in 1986 and was admitted into practice the following year.

She is a highly respected legal practitioner who has appeared as counsel primarily in the Supreme and Federal Courts in the areas of corporate and trade practices law and regulation, contract and commercial law, equity, probate and inheritance.

Ms. Gillan has held a range of decision-making roles as a Commissioner of the District Court and Deputy Chair of various tribunals, including the Building Disputes Tribunal.

Gail Sutherland

Ms. Sutherland was admitted to practice in Western Australia in 1982 and has worked for the majority of her legal career in family law.

Following her admission she practiced in a variety of areas until 1984 when she commenced at Ilbery Barblett and O’Dea as a family law solicitor, later becoming an associate. Ms. Sutherland became an accredited family lawyer in 1994.

She was appointed as Registrar of the Family Court of Western Australia in 2010 and was appointed as the Principal Registrar in 2017.

During her time at the Family Court, Ms. Sutherland has undertaken a number of projects including as a member of the Courts Continuing Professional Education Committee. She has presented to many conferences and seminars including to the Law Society of Western Australia and the Family Law Practitioners Association of Western Australia.

Leonie Forrest

Ms. Forrest has worked for the majority of her legal career in family law.

She was admitted to practice in Western Australia in 1994. She was then a Legal Associate to the Chief Judge/Judges of the Family Court of Western Australia and thereafter a solicitor and partner at William Carr Barrister and Solicitor.

Since January 2013, Ms. Forrest has been a registrar at the Family Court of Western Australia.
