Member for Solomon, Natasha Griggs, has praised the generosity of Territorians less than a week after calling for the community to rally behind victims of the Queensland floods.

“The response has been overwhelming and highlights the extraordinary compassion and empathy that is such a feature of Territory life.” Ms. Griggs said.

“All the items will be sent to people in need in the Lockyer Valley and will be distributed to the families hardest hit by the devastating floods.”

“Some of the donations have been truly remarkable.” Ms. Griggs said.

“One person has donated 10 washing machines and 10 clothes dryers, which will be invaluable during the clean-up.”

“Another has gifted a 2004 Commodore sedan, which he wants donated to a family who lost a car during the floods, but were not insured.” Ms. Griggs said.

“Another builder offered to supply houses at cost price and there have been donations of clothing, footwear, books and of course toiletries and personal items as part of our care packages.”

Ms. Griggs will visit Queensland next week to help with the roll-out of the donated items.

Freight companies Australian Air Express, Northline and NQX will transport the goods, and items will be distributed by local Politicians throughout south-east Queensland.

“The first consignment of care packages will leave Darwin tomorrow morning and will hopefully be making a difference to those hardest hit by the floods at the weekend.” Ms. Griggs said.
