Tourism Resources Need To Be Redirected To Deal With Industry Downturn

A Downturn in holiday travel to Tasmania of 12 % has come as a devastating blow for local tourism operators and highlights the fact that existing resources need to be shifted to meet the pressing challenges facing the industry.

“The latest Tourism Visitor Survey has confirmed that tourism in Tasmania is suffering, and the future is not looking much better, with the growth rate to 2020 predicted at just 0.3 %.” Tasmania Shadow Minister for Tourism Will Hodgman said today.

“The Labor-Green Government has shown an increasing ignorance in relation to growing grassroots discontent from tourism operators, with many operators feeling that their concerns are not being heard.”

“Worse still, the industry has recently highlighted that the Government has failed to deliver on its election promises to support Tourism.” Mr. Hodgman said.

“These statistics unfortunately confirm marketing campaigns being run to attract visitors to Tasmania are clearly not working. These campaigns being run by Tourism Tasmania to attract people to our state should be doing just that, attracting more people.”

“The Government needs to urgently re-think its strategy rather than continuing to live in denial.” Mr. Hodgman said.
