Data released by the ABS today revealing that Tasmania has the lowest growth in housing commencements for the past 12 months is another indictment on Tasmania’s antiquated and bureaucratic planning system, Shadow Minister for Planning Elise Archer said today.

“Tasmania is lagging behind the rest of the country and it is no longer acceptable for Labor and the Greens to sit back and do nothing.” Ms. Archer said.

“Last week, the Tasmanian Liberals introduced legislation into Parliament that will streamline Tasmania’s planning system to make it easier for Tasmanians who want to build a new home to do so without the restrictions imposed by red tape that they currently face.”

“I call on Labor and the Greens, who both promised to introduce a statewide single dwelling residential planning code at the last election, to work with the Liberals to actually reform Tasmania’s planning system urgently.” Ms. Archer said.
