Tasmania’s dairy industry will continue to thrive under a new $7.6 Million research agreement between the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) and Dairy Australia, Minister for Primary Industries and Water Jeremy Rockliff said.

“The agreement is a major vote of confidence in our dairy sector and recognises our state’s renowned research and development capabilities.”

“The partnership between Dairy Australia and TIA, a joint venture between the Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania, will be of great benefit for Tasmanian dairy farmers.”

“Research and development is a key driver of innovation in agriculture and the building block for industry growth. It’s particularly important for the dairy industry, with increasing demand for the premium and safe produce, particularly in overseas markets.” Mr. Rockliff said.

“Despite many challenges in 2015, it was a successful year for Tasmania’s dairy industry as a whole. Our estimated 430-plus registered dairy farmers delivered a record 891.4 Million litres of milk in 2014/15, an increase of more than 10 % on the previous year.”

“Record milk production is a testament to farmers, their estimated 2,600 employees and the industry, and is a reflection of their professionalism and innovation.”

“Additional $7.6 Million investment in research and development will ensure the industry can continue to build on this growth with innovative research.” Mr. Rockliff said.
