OPERATION SAFE ARRIVAL: STAY WITHIN THE LAW

Police Highway Patrol

OPERATION SAFE ARRIVAL

Break the law and you will get caught – Police warn drivers

NSW Police have been out in force on the State’s roads for day four of OPERATION SAFE ARRIVAL, catching motorists breaking the law.

Police conducted 21,400 breath tests and charged 22 drivers for Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol (PCA) offences.

There were 985 infringements for speeding and 1179 for other traffic offences.

The annual Christmas/New Year traffic enforcement campaign, OPERATION SAFE ARRIVAL started on Friday, 18 December with extra Police deployed to the State’s roads to catch out motorists doing the right thing.

Speeding and seatbelt offences will incur double demerit points from next Wednesday (23 December) until Saturday 3 January 2010.

Offences detected by police yesterday (Monday 22 November) includes:

  • About 11.10am Penrith Highway Patrol directed a Holden Commodore to stop on the Old Northern Road, Orchard Hills. The driver decamped from the vehicle and was arrested in nearby bushland and taken to the Penrith Police Station where police discovered he had a learner’s licence which was disqualified until 2028. He was charged with numerous offences, including disqualified driving.

  • At 1.30am a 19-year-old male P (2) licence holder from Lindfield was driving a vehicle on Parramatta Road at Strathfield when police attempted to stop him for a registration offence. The man failed to stop and engaged police in a short pursuit, driving on the M4 Motorway where his speed was checked at 180kmh in a 70kmh zone. The driver then left the motorway and abandoned the car in a nearby industrial complex where, with the help of Australia Post workers, he was arrested. The man allegedly told police he did not stop because he had not cleared a defect on his car. His driver’s licence was suspended on the spot and he will appear at Auburn Local Court in January.

  • At 10pm a 19-year-old Echuca man was stopped by Mathoura Police, who noted a strong odour of cannabis coming from the vehicle. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police allegedly found an amount of amphetamines. The man was charged and will appear before court in January 2010.

Operation Safe Arrival concludes at 2359hrs on Saturday 3 January 2010.

Five Dock carols not so holy for a Police officer

Burwood Local Area Command

Police officer injured during Christmas Carols – Five Dock

A man has been charged following an assault on a police officer in Five Dock overnight.

About 4000 people attended a Carols by Candlelight function in Halliday Park, on McGrath Street, which started about 6pm.

Two police officers were patrolling the event and were required to diffuse a number of altercations that erupted during the event.

About 10pm further police were called to the venue due to the swelling crowd and reports that a teenage girl had been assaulted.

A supervising sergeant from the Burwood Local Area Command attended and came across two men who were allegedly abusive and aggressive towards people in the crowd.

The officer approached the men in relation to their behaviour and one of them allegedly turned on the officer, punching him in the face.

The policeman, who at this stage was surrounded by the volatile crowd, tasered the man bringing him under control and diffusing the situation.

The 18-year-old Five Dock man was arrested and taken to Campsie Police Station where he was charged with assault police, resist arrest, and affray.

The man was given bail and will appear in Burwood Local Court 14 January 2010.

The officer was treated by paramedics at scene for a cut above his eye.

Investigations into the initial assault on the 15-year-old girl will continue.

SUPPLY MEANS SUPPLY

Supply to minors and you will pay the price

Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation

The NSW Police Force will launch a multi-faceted campaign tomorrow specifically targeting the secondary supply of alcohol to minors.

‘SUPPLY MEANS SUPPLY’ is an expansion of a successful local initiative between the Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Service, Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command, and Brisbane Waters Local Area Command.

The current program includes media and marketing strategies, coupled with increased police liquor licensing enforcement.

‘SUPPLY MEANS SUPPLY’, which has been funded by Alcohol Education Rehabilitation Foundation (AER), is initially being implemented in 15 Local Area Commands across New South Wales, including Griffith, St Marys / Penrith, Eastern Beaches, Miranda / Sutherland, Port Macquarie, Lismore / Ballina, Central Coast, Wollongong, Dubbo, Goulburn, and Campbelltown / Macquarie Fields.

Kids and alcohol don’t mix.

Studies show that the adolescent brain is still developing until the age of 22.

Alcohol can seriously inhibit cognitive growth and have a negative effect on a person’s problem solving, concentration, memory, language and planning skills.

The campaign is being launched by:

  • The Hon. Michael Daley MP, NSW Minister for Police
  • Deputy Commissioner Dave Owens, NSW Police Force
  • Supt. Anthony Cooke Drugs and Alcohol Spokesperson, NSW Police Force
  • Scott Wilson, Alcohol Education Rehabilitation Foundation Chairman
  • Professor Ian Webster, Alcohol Education Rehabilitation Foundation Director

Italian National on New South Wales roads not Le Mans racing track

Assistant Commissioner John Hartley

Traffic Services Branch

Man caught speeding three times in 24 hours – Mid-North Coast and Sydney

A man will appear in court today charged after being allegedly caught speeding three times in less than 24 hours by NSW Police.

About 5.40pm on Saturday (19 December) police attached to the Kempsey and Nambucca Heads Highway Patrols were conducting speed checks along the Pacific Highway at Allgomera.

Police allegedly detected a Silver Toyota Aurion travelling Southbound at a speed of 177km/h in a 100 km/h zone. They stopped the car a short distance away and issued the male driver, a 24-year-old Italian national, with a traffic infringement for exceeding the speed over 45km/h.

About 6pm police from Kempsey Highway Patrol allegedly detected the man speeding again, less than five kilometres from where he had originally been stopped. It is alleged that he reached speeds of 120km/h in a 100km/h zone when stopped for the second time. The man was issued with a second traffic infringement notice.

About 5.10pm on Sunday (20 December) police attached to Mt Druitt Highway Patrol were conducting speed checks on the M7 motorway at Glendenning when they allegedly detected the same man, in the same car, travelling at 136km/h in 100km/h zone.

The man was stopped near the intersection of the M7 and Richmond Road at Glendenning where he was arrested and taken to Mt Druitt police station.

The man was later charged with exceed speed by more than 30km/h. He was refused bail and will appear at Mt Druitt Local Court today.

“Despite the warnings that police are out in force targeting speeding, once again, we have people breaking the law with what appears to be total lack of regard for the consequences,” said Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, Commander Traffic Services Branch.

“The road toll continues to rise, and this type of driver behaviour is abhorrent, it shows total disregard for the law, for the safety of others and the safety of one’s self,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.

“Be warned, if you are speeding, you will be caught and dealt with under the full force of the law.”
