Lightning and rain causes havoc in the Blue Mountains

Blue Mountains Local Area Command

Commuters warned to expect delays following landslide and train derailment – Blue Mountains

Police are urging commuters and motorists travelling through the Blue Mountains area to expect significant delays this evening following several landslides and a minor train derailment.

About 4:30pm, emergency services were called to the Great Western Highway at Wentworth Falls after a railway embankment collapsed onto the Northern side of the highway affecting Eastbound traffic.

The Great Western Highway was closed to Eastbound traffic and a number of diversions were put in place while State Rail Personnel and structural engineers examined the scene.

Meanwhile a minor train derailment on the Blue Mountains Line between Linden and Woodford has resulted in the closure of the railway line.

The front wheels of a train with six carriages derailed resulting in all trains to be stopped on the line between Springwood and Lithgow. Approximately 200 passengers who were onboard the train have been removed and walked off the tracks to nearby buses.

Police from the Blue Mountains Local Area Command were called to the scene and conducted disaster victim registrations recording all details of the passengers on board the train. No one was injured as a result of the incident.

In a third incident an underground gas line at Woodford was ruptured after it was hit by lightning this afternoon.

As a result of the lightning strike there was a small fire and officers from the New South Wales Fire Brigades were called to the scene to deal with the gas leak. Police assisted with traffic diversions at the scene and one family residing in Railway Parade evacuated themselves as a precaution.

About 5:40pm another minor landslide caused problems at Mount Victoria where a railway embankment collapsed onto the Darling Causeway affecting the Southbound lanes of the road. Police and Emergency services are currently on scene with local diversions put in place.

Motorists and commuters heading through the Blue Mountains area and specifically Wentworth Falls, Linden, Woodford and Mount Victoria are urged to expect major delays while Police and Emergency services attempt to rectify the problems.

Police are also urging motorists travelling through the area to slow down due to heavy rainfall with a lot of standing water on the roads making the roads slippery and treacherous with visibility reduced and braking distances increased.
