Carry a knife and you may face two years in the slammer

Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Wilkins

Stabbing incidents across Metropolitan Sydney

NSW Police will continue their crackdown on knives and knife-related crime following three separate stabbing incidents across Metropolitan Sydney overnight.

  • In one incident, shortly before 10pm Police were called to a dispute at a block of units in Yangoora Road, Belmore. Upon arrival, they located a male aged in his 40s suffering multiple stab wounds. The man died at the scene and a crime scene was established. A short time later Police attended a nearby address and arrested a 29-year-old man. He was taken to Campsie Police Station and subsequently charged with murder. The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Burwood Local Court today.

  • In another incident, about 6.45pm a 17-year-old male and another male were on a bus when they became involved in an argument. The pair alighted from the bus at Copperfield Drive, Ambarvale, and continued to argue before the 17-year-old was assaulted and stabbed several times to his chest. The other male fled the scene. The teenager was taken to Liverpool Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

  • In a third incident, about 8.25pm a teenage girl was stabbed under her arm following an altercation involving two groups in Little Oxford Street, Surry Hills. The 16-year-old girl was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital and underwent surgery for a collapsed lung. She remains in a serious but stable condition. This incident took place at a house.

Anyone with information about the incidents at Ambarvale and Surry Hills is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In 2009 NSW Police searched more than 177,000 people, including about 44,000 in the South West Metropolitan Region.

Of those searches, 2727 people were found in possession of a knife statewide; 601 people possessed a knife in the South West Metropolitan Region.

Continued efforts by Police have contributed to a reduction in offences involving the use of knives and other sharp weapons across NSW over the past two years.

Commander of South West Metropolitan Region, Assistant Commissioner Stuart Wilkins, said Police will continue to crackdown on knives and knife-related crime throughout the state.

“Police in local area commands across the state are continually making our streets safer, confiscating knives from people out to cause trouble or serious crime. Across the State, the number of offences involving a knife or sharp implement is down.”

“High visibility Police Operations such as OPERATION VIKINGS and OPERATION VISION on our public transport network continue to send a strong message to criminals who carry knives that they will be caught,” Assistant Commissioner Wilkins said.

“Police have the resources and the powers they need to detect and confiscate illegal knives.

“We will continue to focus on illegal knives and make no apologies for this tough stance,” Assistant Commissioner Wilkins said.

The penalty for having custody of knife in a public place or school is a $550 ticket.

The maximum penalty under the Summary Offences Act is 20 Penalty units and/or two years imprisonment.

“If you see someone unlawfully carrying a knife in a public place, I urge you to call Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” Assistant Commissioner Wilkins said.
