Moyes moves to Family First

Victor P Taffa

Rev. Gordon Moyes has announced that he will be joining the Family First Party. This move by Moyes follows his resignation from the Christian Democratic Party.

Speculation is mounting that Moyes may quit Parliament altogether however these rumours may possibly be emanating from the office of Christian Democratic Leader Rev. Fred Nile of whom Moyes has had a major falling out.

The New South Wales Legislative Council is normally the perfect picture of serenity only adds to the uncertainty swirling around Macquarie Street and that of the leadership of Premier Nathan Rees.

National Chairman of Family First, Mr Bob Day AO, announced on behalf of the National Executive and the NSW Division of Family First: “I am pleased to report that the Federal Executive of Family First has accepted Dr Gordon Moyes AC, as a member of the Party and appoints him to be the Parliamentary representative of Family First in New South Wales Parliament.”

Bob Day extolled the calibre of Dr Moyes when he stated, “Gordon Moyes represents the rare group of visionary humanitarians in the mould of William Booth the founder of the Salvation Army, Edith Cowan, Fred Hollows, and Tim Costello.”

Learner driver clocked at 184km/h in 80km/h zone – Hunter Valley

Police have clocked a learner driver travelling more than 100km/h above the legal speed limit in wet conditions in the Hunter Valley.

Officers from the Hunter Valley Highway Patrol observed a beige Toyota Corolla sedan travelling at high speed north along the New England Highway near Singleton about 9.30pm yesterday (Friday 6 November).

7 arrested on Central Coast

Brisbane Water Local Area Command

Seven arrested, charged following major drug operation – NSW Central Coast

Police have put a significant dent in the illicit drug trade on the state’s Central Coast after charging seven alleged members of a speed and ecstasy syndicate.

Officers attached to the Brisbane Water Local Area Command’s Drug Unit commenced ‘Operation Kosmina’ earlier this year to target the illegal supply of Methylamphetamine (speed) and MDMA (ecstasy) locally.

Following a lengthy investigation, the covert operation was expanded to incorporate Tuggerah Lakes LAC investigators and the Region Enforcement Squad at Gordon, in Sydney’s north.

The operation culminated yesterday (Friday 6 November) in the arrest of three men and four women and the seizure of speed and ecstasy, worth approximately $100,000 on the street.

Two men, aged 37 and 43, and a 34-year-old woman were arrested by police at The Entrance; a 38-year-old man was taken into custody at a Woongarrah residence; two women, aged 19 and 20, were arrested at a luxury Terrigal hotel; and a 56-year-old woman was captured at Dural.

Search warrants executed on the Woongarrah house and another at Pennant Hills allegedly turned up cash and drug paraphernalia.

All seven alleged offenders have been charged with a raft of drug-related matters.

The 37, 38 and 43-year-old men have been refused bail to appear in Gosford Bail Court this morning, while it’s expected the 56-year-old woman will face Parramatta Bail Court today.

Their three co-accused have been granted conditional bail to appear in court at a later date.

Gerringong Road Fatality

Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit

Police investigate fatal crash – Gerringong

Police have appealed for a truck driver who might hold vital information about a fatal crash at Gerringong, on the state’s south coast, to come forward.

About 8.45am yesterday (Friday 6 November), a Holden Commodore station wagon was towing a trailer southbound on the Princes Highway at Gerringong.

The vehicle was being driven by a 49-year-old Windang man, who had a 48-year-old man as a passenger.

It appears the vehicle jack-knifed as it negotiated a small rise and crossed to the northbound lanes.

The side of the Holden hit a guard rail while the trailer struck a Toyota van being driven by a 75-year-old Nowra man, who had a 73-year-old female passenger with him.

Both occupants of the Toyota were trapped and had to be released. The elderly woman was airlifted from the crash scene but died prior to reaching hospital.

The highway was blocked for several hours while investigations were undertaken.

Officers from the Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit are continuing their inquiries and have seized both vehicles for mechanical examination.

Investigators have appealed for the driver of a heavy vehicle that was travelling in front of the Toyota van to come forward. Officers have stressed that vehicle was not involved in the collision but the driver might be able to provide police with vital information.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crash Investigators via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Traffic Services Branch

Day 1 results

Police are pleased with results from the first day of operation Drink Drive II, with a significant drop in drink driving offences detected by police compared to last year.

With 34,491 people breath tested so far, only 30 people have been charged. Last year, 108 drink driving offences were detected during the first day of the operation.

Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, commander of Traffic Services said “Although the results are encouraging, it’s still 30 too many”.

The operation period also remains fatality free.

Despite the pleasing results, there have been numerous acts of stupidity witnessed by police during day one of Drink Drive II:

*About 1.15am on Thursday 5 November 2009 police were conducting stationary RBT on King Georges Road, Beverley Hills when a vehicle was stopped by police and a rear seat passenger was seen to be holding an unrestrained three-year-old boy in her arms. Police advised her to place the child in an empty child seat which was in the vehicle. However, police discovered that the child seat was sitting loose on the seat and not properly fitted to the vehicle. The driver was instructed to fit the child seat properly and sit the child in the seat prior to leaving the site. The driver was issued a ticket for having an unrestrained child in the vehicle, which is a $253 fine with the loss of three demerit points.

He was stopped a short distance away on the Hume Hwy and checks revealed the vehicle was stolen the day before in Frankston, Victoria. Checks on the man also found he had never held a license and had an outstanding warrant. The man was arrested and taken to Gundagai Police Station where he was detected with a special range concentration of alcohol, with a reading of 0.02.
