Queenslanders have been urged to join the clean-up on Sunday. Shadow Minister for the Environment Jack Dempsey said Clean Up Australia Day 2011 was an opportunity for all Queenslanders to help clean up after the floods and the cyclone.

“This Sunday (March 6) I urge all Queenslanders to get involved.” Mr. Dempsey said.

“I know thousands of people have already volunteered their time to help clean up after the floods and the cyclones, but there’s still a lot of debris …plastic bags and containers and other rubbish that needs to be collected and sent for recycling or disposed of properly.”

Mr. Dempsey said a real concern was the amount of plastic along the banks of streams, rivers in estuaries and on beaches.

“This poses a serious risk, particularly to marine life.”

Mr. Dempsey said there were at least 85 sites around Queensland being targeted and anyone interested in joining or donating to the campaign should register with Clean Up Australia.
