A new accommodation facility to support people with a spinal cord injury will soon be established in Perth, thanks to a grant from Lotterywest.

Disability Services Minister Stephen Dawson today presented Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA) with a grant of $750,000, which will be used to develop fully accessible accommodation for people with a newly acquired spinal cord injury.

“This home will provide individuals and their families with a comfortable environment, and a place they can call home for a short time during the early stages of recovery following a spinal cord injury.” Minister for Disability Services Stephen Dawson said.

“It will give people the opportunity to enjoy some time with their family away from the hospital or rehabilitation facility.”

Property will provide individuals and their families with temporary accommodation before they return home from hospital and/or rehabilitation. It will also enable people to learn about their ongoing care needs, fully supported by drop-in or emergency care as required.

This facility will be developed through SCIA’s CHOICES initiative. CHOICES are Client-Centred Housing Offering Inspired, Creative, Empowering Services.

Planning for the Perth site started in 2013, in response to a feasibility study and extensive stakeholder liaison which showed a need for a property to be established locally.

“I applaud the work of Lotterywest as it continues to help make a significant difference to local communities through its grants program.” Minister Dawson said.

Facility will include a 3 or 4-bedroom detached house and while a suitable location is still to be determined, it will be close to public transport, hospitals and other medical facilities.
