Greener Buildings Help Hospitals Save Millions On Energy

Andrews Government is boosting solar power supplies and energy efficiency at hospitals and regional health services across Victoria, to drive down energy costs.

Minister for Finance Robin Scott and Minister for Health Jill Hennessy today toured Frankston Hospital to announce $26 Million in funding through the Greener Government Buildings program.

“We’re taking action on climate change and driving down costs for our hospitals and health services.” Minister for Finance Robin Scott said.

“Greener Government Buildings program is a win/win it reduces greenhouse gas emissions, creates jobs and saves Victorians money.”

This vital program which funds energy efficient upgrades in government buildings was reinstated by the Labor Government in August last year after it was slashed by the former Liberal Government.

“We’re making the investments our hospitals need to keep pace with increasing demand so they can focus on what they do best, which is saving lives and caring for Victorians.” Minister for Health Jill Hennessy said.

“Our investments stand in stark contrast to the $1 Billion in health cuts dealt out by the previous Liberal Government, who decided this important program should also be cut.”

Up to $7 Million will be allocated to Peninsula Health which operates Frankston Hospital.

These upgrades to Victorian hospitals are estimated to save more than $70 Million over the life of the investments, and cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 20,000 tonnes each year.

Andrews Government will continue to analyse health service energy use to determine which hospitals will benefit the most from solar panels and energy efficiency solutions.

Health services identified will then be eligible for loans to install energy efficiency technology. They will also have the opportunity to bulk buy solar panels through Health Purchasing Victoria to maximise benefits delivered through this initiative.

Greener Governments Buildings program further supports the growth of clean energy and technology industries creating jobs and strengthening Victoria’s position as the centre of excellence for energy efficiency.
