Adults over the age of 18 will be able to consume a limited amount of alcohol at two designated drinking zones one on the Esplanade and one in Kings Park during Skyworks 2011.

Premier Colin Barnett said the decision to allow some alcohol consumption had been made after extensive consultation with the WA Police and the City of Perth.

“There was much public debate after the 2010 Skyworks we had less anti-social behaviour but attendance dropped as well.” Premier Barnett said.

“We want to allow the Perth Public to enjoy a responsible drink with their families while enjoying Perth’s biggest annual community event.”

“People are responsible enough to partake in a casual drink without being excessive and we hope that they prove us right in this regard.” Premier Barnett said.

Under the arrangements, visitors will be permitted to drink alcohol within the designated areas between 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm. The fireworks will start at 8 pm.

Those attending the zones will be limited to BYO either one six pack of beer or pre-mixed drinks or a bottle of wine per adult. There will be no sale of alcohol at the event. Juveniles will be allowed into the designated areas if accompanied by an adult but underage drinking at any area will not be tolerated.

A strong Security and Police Presence will be on site to ensure consumption of alcohol does not take place outside of the designated times and to monitor behaviour.

The penalty for consuming liquor in a public place is $2,000 or a $200 on-the-spot fine and Police are able to seize and dispose of opened and unopened liquor from people drinking outside the designated areas.
