All seniors aged 60 years or over will receive free travel on public buses across the Territory from 1 July 2017, delivering on the Gunner Government’s election commitment to improve lifestyle outcomes for Territory seniors.

Acting Minister for Infrastructure, Planning & Logistics, Eva Lawler, said seniors continue to contribute to the Northern Territory’s economic growth and it is important for the Territory’s future that every effort is made to keep seniors here.

“Territory Government is committed to assisting seniors through concessions that assist with living costs and continues to make the Territory the best place to call home.” Ms. Lawler said.

“This is in stark contrast to the former CLP Government who scrapped free transport for seniors in 2013 and restricted their ability to live flexible and independent lives.”

“We are introducing more initiatives to improve the quality of life for seniors, including reforming the NT Pensioner Concession Scheme with consultation on the proposed new scheme to start in July.”

Government is introducing other initiatives to keep seniors in the Territory, including:

  • A stamp duty discount of up to $10,000 for the purchase of a home valued up to $750,000 or vacant land valued up to $385,000,
  • Working with the Commissioner for Public Employment to look at how to best retain ageing workers in the public sector through flexible working arrangements,
  • $500,000 towards facilitating the release of land to build retirement villages in Alice Springs, Darwin and the rural area, to keep families together,
  • An Elder Abuse hotline and the development of resources to educate and raise awareness of Elder Abuse.

Northern Territory Government is delivering $33.9 Million to support seniors and carers through the Pensioner Concession Scheme; an increase of $2.1 Million.

Minister Lawler said consultation on the revised scheme will commence next month with the new scheme commencing on 1 January 2018.

“We want to create a scheme that is fairer, more flexible and that can suit a range different circumstances, which is the why the consultation process is so important to us.” Ms. Lawler said.

“I encourage all seniors to have their say once consultation starts with the Department of Territory Families.”

Consultation on the NT Pensioner Concession Scheme will commence mid-July.

Free travel on public buses starts on 1 July 2017. Free travel will also apply to all Australian Senior Card holders aged 60 and over on presentation of a valid State or Territory seniors card.
