Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras today honoured an election commitment and approved previously announced support grants totalling more than $1.3 Million for nearly 700 Multicultural Senior Community organisations across Victoria.

As previously announced, the Victorian Government has increased the 2011 Senior Citizens Organisational Support grants by 40 %. Additionally, Public Liability Insurance will be provided through a new 12-month Senior Citizens Insurance Scheme established through the Victorian Multicultural Commission.

These grants acknowledge the significant costs associated with running voluntary and not-for-profit organisations.

Mr. Kotsiras said these grants would directly benefit seniors community organisations and help support their operations and activities, thus strengthening the Victorian community.

“Importantly these grants not only promote community cohesion and harmony but enable senior Victorians to participate in their local communities.” Mr. Kotsiras said.

“We are lucky to live in a state where our various cultures unify us by our commitment to our nation and its democratic institutions, laws, values and a ‘fair go’ for all.”

“We are committed to assisting our senior citizens from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to hold regular activities and events which allow them to celebrate and maintain their different cultures while promoting social cohesion.” Mr. Kotsiras said.
