The most recent tender as part of the total redevelopment works underway at Royal Darwin Hospital has been awarded.

Halikos Constructions has been awarded the construction contract for refurbishment works on the ground floor of Royal Darwin Hospital for the outpatients and pre-admissions clinic, including refurbishment of the main entry foyer.

Halikos has been based in Darwin for over 30 years and has a strong commitment to employ and buy locally. In supporting local services, suppliers and subcontractors, Halikos displays a deep commitment to the local community and to building the Territory economy.

The $13.5 Million project includes the relocation of the Receiver of Territory Monies, Indigenous Liaison Office, pharmacy and security, the addition of new Patients Transit Lounge, asbestos remediation and fire safety works.

Approximately 150 workers will be employed at different periods of construction and Halikos aim for 30 % indigenous employment participation.

“A fresh entrance is welcome, this will help to improve the environment at the hospitals main entry.” Health Minister John Elferink said.

“The design is based on contemporary models of care and will assist with patient flow in and when transitioning out of the hospital.”

Careful co-ordination will be ensured to maintain patient, staff and visitor safety in one of the busiest zones within the hospital.

Construction is expected to commence in March and be completed in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Other redevelopment works are progressing well with:

  • A culturally appropriate waiting room in the Emergency Department is currently under construction and scheduled for completion late May
  • Paediatric and Isolation rooms remain on track for completion in the second half of 2016
  • Outpatients and pre-admission clinic works that are underway and are due for completion at the late 2016
