Young athletes have the opportunity to take a step closer to achieving their sporting dreams with the opening of the latest round of the Athlete Travel Subsidy Scheme, Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies announced today.

The scheme supports talented athletes aged 13-21 by offsetting costs associated with attending training camps and competitions at regional, State, national and international level.

Ms. Davies said the program had already assisted 1,020 aspiring athletes and she encouraged those who were eligible to apply.

“We know it can be difficult for families and young athletes to afford to travel for training and competition but we know this subsidy goes some way to helping them.” Ms. Davies said.

“I encourage young Western Australian athletes and their families to look into the program to find out more and apply.”

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said many young athletes were excluded from State and national representation at sporting events due to ongoing travel requirements and associated costs.

“Through this scheme, Royalties for Regions is improving opportunities for talented young people to reach their sporting dreams, even while living in regional Western Australia.” Mr. Redman said.

Metropolitan athletes have been allocated $1Million and in regional Western Australia a total of $1.75 Million over four years has been allocated through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program.
