For the first time in Tasmania, retail trade has broken through the half a billion dollar mark for July, Treasurer Peter Gutwein said.

The record breaking month caps off a strong 12 months for Tasmania’s retail sector. Retail trade grew by 4.9 % in the 12 months to July, the strongest growth rate of any state and well above the national rate of 2.7 %.

“We’re seeing growth in retail trade because business confidence is high, there is significant activity in the building and construction sector, visitor numbers to the State continue to increase and our economy is growing at the fastest rate in 6 years.”

“There is still more to do and the Government will be working to ensure we continue to see growth in our economy and in retail trade.” Treasurer Gutwein said.
