Rann’s Arrogance Fails SA On Anti-Bikie Laws

The High Court’s Strong Rejection of the Rann Labor Government’s Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Act is a shameful failure of an incompetent and arrogant government.

Isobel Redmond, Leader of the Opposition said that the Rann Labor Government had failed South Australians when they ignored Opposition calls to amend the legislation in the SA Parliament rather than wasting time and money on a High Court challenge.

“Their inept and shoddy work in pursuing the High Court challenge has needlessly delayed any implementation of effective, constitutional anti-bikie laws.” Ms. Redmond said.

“A year spent fighting the Supreme Court ruling against this legislation has left SA no closer to implementing tough, effective anti-bikie laws.”

“Had they listened to the SA Liberal’s advice on anti- bikie laws it could have already been debated and passed by the Parliament at no cost to the Tax Payer.” Ms. Redmond said.

“While we will all need time to analyse the implications of the judgment, I call on the Rann Government to stop fighting the courts and the constitution and focus on fighting crime on the ground.”

“Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs will be brought under control by Police and the community, not by lawyers and legislators.” Ms. Redmond said.

“The SA Liberal Party has consistently expressed concern that this legislation would be both unsuccessful in curtailing Gangs and that it posed a risk to the rights of the innocent.”

“The High Court has thrown a challenge to the Government we will now see whether Attorney-General John Rau has the courage to stand up against Rann’s rhetoric and instead deliver real action.” Ms. Redmond said.
