Queensland families and visitors are being encouraged to make the state’s national parks one of their top picks for a fun filled holiday this summer.

National Parks Minister Steve Dickson said national parks were now more accessible to families than ever, with nearly all of Queensland’s 306 national parks and forests open to visitors.

“Wherever your destination and wherever you live, you will find a national park or marine park that suits your summer fun plans, and we are continuing to improve accessibility to allow more people to enjoy our parks.” Mr. Dickson said.

“While the previous Government locked up many of our national parks, our strong plan to increase tourism is creating new opportunities for Queensland families and visitors to enjoy our natural assets.”

“The National Parks website can help you locate National Parks nearby with specific facilities or ones that cater for specific activities such as camping, hiking, fishing, cycling, canoeing or horse riding and might even ignite interest in an activity you’ve never tried before.” Mr. Dickson said.

Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps said the innovative QTopo online topographic map atlas allowed anyone to create a custom purpose map based on their plans for the holiday season.

“QTopo is cutting edge technology that for the first time allows locals and visitors to go online to view, download and print topographic data about any part of Queensland.”

“QTopo provides details such as the location of water features, mountains, valleys, roads, place names, local government areas, National Parks and State borders.” Mr. Cripps said.

“This makes QTopo ideal for your holiday planning with a range of personal uses including travel, mountain biking, four-wheel driving, hiking and orienteering.”

“QTopo allows instant access to the most up-to-date information.  Maps can be created on your PC or mobile devices, saved for viewing later, emailed to friends, or printed at home to customise your trip.” Mr. Cripps said.
