Price Increase A Welcome Move For Potato Farmers

Victor P Taffa

The Tasmanian Liberals welcome news today that the State’s Potato Farmers supplying to Simplot’s Ulverstone Factory will receive an extra $20 per tonne for their produce, Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Jeremy Rockliff said today.

“As the clean up from flooding continues and the severe impact of excessive rain is realised, the reality is that many individual farm businesses have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost production alone, with the multiplier effect on Rural and Regional economics on a massive scale.”

“Often people are critical of large production companies for price cuts, and it is important that these companies receive a tick when they do the right thing by our farmers.” Mr. Rockliff said.

“We strongly support the work that the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association and grower representative have done with Simplot to negotiate the price rise.”

“The Tasmanian Liberals will also continue to fight for the best deal for the state’s farmers, and ensure that they receive the productive future they deserve for their efforts.” Mr. Rockliff said.
