Port Arthur Development A Win For Regional Tasmania

Victor P Taffa

Acting Premier Jeremy Rockliff welcomes today’s news that Federals will proceed with its proposed hotel development at Port Arthur.

“We are in the middle of a boom in visitor numbers and it’s vital that we continue to increase and expand our visitor and accommodation offerings, which Federals’ new hotel at Port Arthur will certainly do.”

“It’s also vital that we attract visitors to regional Tasmania, to spread the benefits of the visitor boom to all parts of the State.” Mr. Rockliff said.

Federals’ development will also create jobs in regional Tasmania and will complement the investment that State and Federal Governments have made in the nearby Three Capes Track.

“Port Arthur is an iconic part of our visitor experience. Daytime visitor numbers in 2014-15 hit 272, 653, a 7.7 % increase on 2014-15 numbers and a 27.4 % increase on 2013-14 numbers.” Mr. Rockliff said.

The surge in visitor numbers looks set to increase. Already in the first four months of 2015-16, visitor numbers are up 13 % compared to the same time last year and recently it was announced that the number of cruise ships calling at Port Arthur is set to more than double, from 10 in 2015-16 to 22 in 2016-17.

“The Hodgman State Government is committed to expanding our tourism and hospitality sector to create jobs and grow the economy.” Mr. Rockliff said.
