  • Perth Children’s Hospital is now on track to accept its first patients in May 2018
  • Replacement of brass fittings is progressing and water testing and analysis are showing positive trends
  • This amended timeframe will allow time to address remaining issues on site and for a safe hospital commissioning period

McGowan Government announced today the Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) would be open and ready for its first patients in May next year.

“This timeframe has been based on a comprehensive risk assessment so that we can open the hospital for patients and staff as soon as it is safe to do so.” Minister for Health Roger Cook said.

“Since we came to office, this Government has been committed to fixing the remaining issues at PCH and to ensuring the safe commissioning of the facility.”

As previously announced, the hospital will have a staged opening with the final move day anticipated on a Sunday in June 2018.

A plan of action is now in place to implement the Chief Health Officer’s (CHO) recommendations to remediate the ongoing lead issue and to address other remnant building issues.

Water sampling and analysis are showing promising results. On November 8, water testing was conducted at 33 locations within the hospital, chosen due to previously high levels of lead exceedances.

These results showed 32 of the 33 locations passing based on a methodology consistent with that used by the CHO.

Following an extensive product search, work is now underway to replace brass components of Thermostatic Mixing Valve assembly boxes at PCH with a custom-made plastic configuration being manufactured locally.

With the timeline for remediation now clearly understood, safe opening options for the hospital have been assessed. Indicative dates are May 2018 for selected outpatients and June 2018 for the final move of all patients from Princess Margaret Hospital for Children.

Exact dates will be confirmed following a detailed manufacturing schedule being confirmed, completion of the remediation works and further testing to ensure PCH’s potable water meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

Current plan allows for the manufacture of replacement parts for water remediation, additional water testing by the CHO and a safe hospital commissioning period.
