Tourism Minister Liz Constable has congratulated the organisers and competitors who participated in the Perth International Regatta, which finished yesterday.

Dr. Constable said the regatta, held from November 16-21, was the major prelude to one of the biggest sporting events to be held in Western Australia, the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

“The strong performance and calibre of the sailors provides a taste of just how competitive the Perth 2011 championships, to be held in December next year, will be.” the Minister said.

“During the last six days, 40 nations have been represented with 230 boats, 300 athletes, 120 race management and support boats, and 500 volunteers competing in WA’s biggest ever dinghy sailing regatta.”

“Of the athletes who have competed, 40 have been in the world’s top 10, and we have also had four world number one crews taking up the challenge.”

“I would like to congratulate all the winners of the competition.” Dr. Constable said.

Next year’s Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships will be the key qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Dr. Constable said Perth 2011 was expected to attract about 5,000 visitors from 75 countries and contribute more than $40 Million to the State’s Economy.

“The event will be four times bigger than the London 2012 Olympic Games Sailing Regattas.” the Minister said.

“It will also provide worldwide exposure to Fremantle’s long standing and rich maritime history through interstate and international media coverage.”

“The State’s successful bid to secure the event against countries such as Korea, Germany and Russia clearly shows that we have developed a strong, international reputation as a key sailing destination.” Dr. Constable said.
