How Do I Enrol As A Norfolk Island Elector?

Victor P Taffa

Changes have been made to the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (the Electoral Act) and Referendum (Machinery Provisions) Act 1984 to require eligible Australian citizens and eligible other persons living on Norfolk Island to enrol and vote in federal elections and referendums from 1 July 2016.

Norfolk Island residents must enrol for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Division that does not contain the Jervis Bay Territory.

The changes will see residents of Norfolk Island being represented by a single federal member of the House of Representatives, the Member for Canberra; and Senators for the ACT.

As part of the changes, a transitional period from 6 May to 30 June has been provided to allow electors making a claim for enrolment leading up to 1 July to be enrolled for the Division of Canberra.
