Territorians will have the option to spend time at the Nightcliff Jetty over the Easter long weekend, with Stage one of works completed well ahead of schedule.

Minister for Infrastructure Peter Chandler said the iconic northern suburbs landmark is a popular destination for fishing, picnics and family outings.

“I am absolutely thrilled with the completion of works for this project to make the jetty structure safe for the public to use again.” Mr. Chandler said.

“The decision was made to close the Nightcliff Jetty in October last year for safety reasons and discussions commenced on how to best utilise this iconic landmark going forward.”

“The Northern Territory Government listened to the wants of the community and decided to invest $1 Million to give the jetty a face-lift.”

A $120,000 contract for Stage one works was awarded to local company Advanced Civil Engineering for immediate structural works.

“Stage one works involved urgent repairs to jetty braces, the stairwell and hand railing, as well as the replacement of light poles and new navigation lights.” Mr. Chandler said.

“This stage has been completed two months ahead of schedule, which is just tremendous.”

“Now that stage one is complete, the focus will be to ensure stage two progresses with minimal disruption to the public.” Mr. Chandler said.

“Stage two is currently in the design phase and scheduled to go to tender in May.”

The second stage of these works will involve repairs to the concrete base of the jetty, replacement of protective wrapping and general structural repairs. Mr. Chandler said.
