Premier Colin Barnett today announced funding for the new $27.4 Million Western Suburbs Police Station to service the Claremont, Cottesloe, Wembley and Subiaco Police sub districts had been brought forward by two years.

Premier Barnett said the design work on the Project would commence in mid-2011, with expected completion by 2014.

“I’m pleased we have been able to bring this project forward from the previously scheduled 2013 start date. A contemporary Police facility for the area is well overdue.” the Premier said.

“This District Police Station is part of a strategy by the WA Police based on fewer and bigger Police Stations, which will enhance Police Frontline Service Delivery in the area by freeing up more Police from desk duties.”

“This means more Police and Patrol cars will be on the Streets in the Western Suburbs District, preventing crime before it occurs and responding to incidents more rapidly.” Premier Barnett said.

Police Minister Rob Johnson said the old model of a Police Station in every suburb did not provide the best Police Service or level of Protection in modern Western Australia.

“Buildings don’t provide protection Police Officers with the right equipment out on Patrol provide the best service.” Mr. Johnson said.

“State-of-the-art communications and in-car computers mean Patrol Cars, and even foot Patrols with the TADISlite hand-held computers, do not need to be close to a station to be effective.”

“The old Police Stations in the Western Suburbs are well past their use-by date, expensive to maintain and lack the functionality required to support today’s Policing needs.” Mr. Johnson said.

“The Western Suburbs Police Station and the Perth Police Complex in Northbridge, will significantly boost Policing resources and community safety in the central and western suburbs.”

The preferred site for the Western Suburbs Police Station is centrally located at the corner of Shenton Road and Claremont Crescent, within the Claremont North East Precinct (NEP). The site is owned by the Town of Claremont, which supports the development of the station on this site.

Earlier this month, the State Government announced the redevelopment of the NEP, surrounding Claremont Oval.

The major redevelopment will include about 500 residential apartments, townhouse lots, retail and commercial floor space as part of an integrated mixed-use development within the Precinct.
