Today I met with children and parents who will become part of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Tasmania from July 1 as the transition to the full scheme commences, Minister for Human Services Jacquie Petrusma said.

With the Budget back on track the Hodgman State Government is able to invest more in essential services that support the vulnerable, this includes $572 Million over the next four years for the NDIS.

The NDIS is life-changing reform. It will provide people with choice and control around their care needs and give them the ability to participate in the broader community and to achieve their goals and their aspirations.

The roll out to the full scheme from this Friday will see children aged 12-14 start to transition to the NDIS.

It is expected that over 1,100 people will move into the NDIS in the 12-14 and 25-28 age categories in the 2016-17 financial year with approximately 10,600 Tasmanians to be in the NDIS by June 30, 2019.

Importantly, clients of Tasmania’s specialist disability services will continue to get their existing supports until they move to the NDIS.

The expansion of the NDIS is also a great opportunity for Tasmanian jobseekers with over 2,500 jobs expected to be created in the Tasmanian disability services sector.

“To ensure we build a skilled and capable workforce in the disability services sector the Tasmanian Government committed $250,000 over two years to the peak body for disability service providers, National Disability Services (Tasmania) with $125,000 to be allocated in 2016-17.” Ms. Petrusma said.
