The Territory Opposition is demanding the Minister for Health Kon Vatskalis explain why there has been an enormous blow-out in elective surgery waiting times at Royal Darwin Hospital during the last 12 months.

The MyHospital web site launched today confirms Royal Darwin’s performance is well below the national average and is going backwards in most Elective Surgery waiting times.

“Territorians regularly wait longer than other Australians for routine medical procedures and the situation is going from bad to worse under this incompetent Minister.” Matt Conlan Shadow Minister for Health said today.

“In the last year the average time patients were kept waiting for orthopaedic surgery at RDH blew out from 45 days to 89 days.”

“In the last year the average time patients were kept waiting for a total hip replacement at RDH blew out from 100 days to 146 days.” Mr. Conlan said.

“In the last year the average time patients were kept waiting for a total knee replacement at RDH blew out from 206 days to 248 days.”

“In the last year the average time patients were kept waiting for ear, nose and throat surgery at RDH blew out from 50 days to 113 days.” Mr. Conlan said.

“In the last year the average time patients were kept waiting for ear surgery at RDH blew out from 152 days to 429 days.”

“In the last year the average time patients were kept waiting for nose surgery at RDH blew out from 242 to 250 days.” Mr. Conlan said.

“In the last year the average time patients were kept waiting for tonsillectomy surgery at RDH blew out from 85 days to 191 days.”

“This sorry tale is repeated again and again across the range of Elective Surgery procedures.” Mr. Conlan said.

”Nor are things any better in Royal Darwin’s Emergency Department. Just 61% of emergency patients were seen within the required time and that has fallen from 65% the year before.” Mr. Conlan said.
