A Coalition Government will work with Victoria Police to upgrade Mt. Waverley Police Station from less than 12-hour to 24-hour Operation, Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Leader Ted Baillieu said today.

“The Coalition’s commitment to upgrading Mt. Waverley Police Station will see additional Police Officers deployed at Mt. Waverley so residents will be better protected around the clock seven days a week.” Mr. Baillieu said.

“Our commitment will also take the pressure off Police working out of Glen Waverley Police Station who currently struggle to meet rostered shifts because of Premier John Brumby’s failure to provide adequate resources.”

“Mt. Waverley families deserve better protection than they are getting under John Brumby’s soft-on-crime approach.”

“Victorians have suffered under John Brumby as violent crime has increased while police numbers have failed to keep pace with population growth.”

“John Brumby arrogantly spends money on self-promoting party-political ads instead of funding the Police needed to protect the families of Mt. Waverley.”

“Together with local Liberal Candidate for Mt Waverley Michael Gidley, the Coalition has listened to this community and understands the need for increased Police Presence around the clock and a zero tolerance approach to stopping thugs and criminals.” Mr. Baillieu said.

According to Victoria Police data, Full Time Equivalent Police Officers at Glen Waverley and Mt Waverley Police Stations and the Glen Waverley Crime Investigation Unit have fallen from more than 70 to 65.

This fall in Police Numbers has occurred despite the local Population growing from 65,000 to 68,000 between 2001 and 2006, according to census data.

Shadow Minister for Police and Leader of the Nationals Peter Ryan said John Brumby was out of touch with the need to protect Mt Waverley families.

“The Coalition’s commitment to increasing Police Numbers by 1,700 will make it possible to provide the additional Police Officers needed to upgrade Mt Waverley Police Station to a 24-hour operation all week.” Mr. Ryan said.

Liberal Candidate for Mt. Waverley Michael Gidley said many locals had talked with him about inadequate Police resources and their concerns about growing violent crime in the area.

“The people of Mt Waverley will be reassured by our commitment and our plan to recruit 1,700 more Police and I know how much Mt. Waverley needs extra Police Resources.” Mr. Gidley said.

“Ted Baillieu has led the debate on law and order and I know that under a Coalition Government Mt. Waverley will get the resources and support it needs to make this community safe again.”

Despite record rising violence in Victoria, John Brumby spends the least per person on Policing of any state and Victoria has the lowest number of Police Officers Per Person of any State (Source: Productivity Commission).
