Redevelopment Opportunity For Katherine Grows The Economy And Creates Jobs
Victor P Taffa
Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Nicole Manison today announced an Expression of Interest (EOI) process to redevelop and revitalise the former Katherine Sports and Recreation Club site.
Ms. Manison said inspections had been undertaken to assess the best use of the site ongoing, and a decision to redevelop the site is considered the most beneficial for the community.
Expression of Interest process for the existing site will enable those with an interest in the site to put forward a range of potential concepts and uses that are consistent with the EOI objectives.
“This EOI process represents an exciting opportunity for redevelopment of the site, to create jobs and stimulate the Katherine economy, with a development that provides both short and long term economic benefit.” Ms. Manison said.
“Any development would need to provide a benefit to the broader community and address flood issues with the site.”
“This Government made an election commitment to contribute $250,000 to the refurbishment of the building as an all-purpose community centre. However, it is clear the building would cost much more to maintain.”
“To this end, that funding remains committed to the development of a community centre for Katherine and discussions are ongoing with the Katherine community and the Member for Katherine.” Ms. Manison said.
Member for Katherine Sandra Nelson said this is a positive outcome for Katherine.
“Since the closure of the club facilities, many sporting groups have utilised the Katherine Town Council sports oval, which has recently upgraded amenities.” Ms. Nelson said.
“This decision provides two opportunities for economic development in Katherine, one at the old site, and one for a future community centre.”
An EOI process will be released by the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics in coming weeks.
