Michael Brett Appointed As Judge To Supreme Court Of Tasmania

Mr. Michael Brett has been appointed as a Judge to the Supreme Court of Tasmania, Attorney-General Vanessa Goodwin said.

Mr. Brett has been a Magistrate for six years and has held the position of Chief Magistrate since September 2015.

Before his appointment to the judiciary, Mr. Brett practised extensively in criminal, family, planning law, and other matters for 16 years in Launceston, and a further 13 years in Queensland.

Mr. Brett has held positions with the following:

  • Anti-Discrimination Tribunal;
  • Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania Board;
  • Legal Profession Board of Tasmania;
  • Northern Vice President of the Bar Association of Tasmania;
  • President of the Family Law Practitioners Association of Tasmania.

“I congratulate Mr. Brett on his appointment, which follows a selection process conducted in line with the Protocol for Judicial Appointments.” Attorney-General Goodwin said.

Mr. Brett’s appointment will take effect from 11 July 2016, and a process to replace Mr. Brett as Chief Magistrate will commence shortly.
