Premier Ted Baillieu today launched the 25th anniversary program of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival at the Arts Centre Spiegeltent, one of 123 venues for this year’s comedy bonanza.

“Melbourne should brace itself for a month of hilarity.” Premier Baillieu said.

“More than half a million festival fans will converge on the city and surrounds this year to have their funny bones tickled by more than 1,000 performers across 363 events.”

Launched by the late great Peter Cook in 1987, the Festival has grown into one of Australia’s most well-known and well-loved annual events. Starting out with just over 50 shows in 33 venues, the Festival has grown over the past 25 years to be the launching pad for major national and international comedians.

Premier Baillieu announced an expanded free family program the Very Big Laugh Out for this year’s Festival, featuring the best in international and Australian outdoor physical comedy.

The Victorian Government has provided extra support to present the Very Big Laugh Out, which will take place during the Festival in the City Square, Federation Square and Yarra Terrace.

“Over the last quarter of a century, the Comedy Festival has made an extraordinary contribution to Victoria and is a comedic and cultural landmark for locals and visitors.” Premier Baillieu said.

“Winter may be defined by footy fever, but when laughter rings across Melbourne we know that autumn and the Comedy Festival have arrived.”

A multitude of much-loved comedians from past Festivals and this year’s Festival, including:

  • Fiona O’Loughlin,
  • Rod Quantock,
