A Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Government will bring forward Council Elections by six weeks to reflect the wishes of Local Government, Shadow Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell announced today.

Mrs. Powell made the announcement in Mildura today whilst travelling with Member for Mildura Peter Crisp and meeting with the Mildura Rural City Council.

“The municipal elections are currently scheduled in the last week of November which makes it extremely difficult for new councillors to make informed decisions on important issues before the year’s end.” Mrs. Powell said.

“The development of council budgets creates particular concern for Councils, with new councillors thrown straight into what is a complex and important task.”

“Bringing forward the election by six weeks will allow incoming councillors more time to familiarise themselves with the intricacies of council prior to beginning work on the following year’s budget.”

Mrs. Powell said the Coalition would amend the Local Government Act to provide for Municipal Elections in Victoria to be held on the second Saturday in October.

“Today’s announcement follows ongoing consultation with councils across Victoria and peak bodies for Local Government.” Mrs. Powell said.

“The Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition has listened and in Government we will act on the concerns held by many Councillors regarding the timing of Council Elections.”

Mrs. Powell said the earlier date would also give new Councillors sufficient time to familiarise themselves with local issues which needed to be taken into account for strategic planning and decision making.

“Earlier Municipal Elections will allow council officers and advisors to better prepare Councillors on Council Plans, Budgets, the Code of Conduct and the Local Government Act requirements.” Mrs. Powell said.
