Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher today joined entertainment company Global Creatures to announce the world premiere of the musical version of King Kong will take place at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre in early 2013.

Making the announcement today at the dance auditions for King Kong Ms Asher said the production would not tour elsewhere in Australia.

“This confirms Melbourne’s position as Australia’s favourite destination for great theatre and major events and underscores its international status as a hub of cultural excellence.” Ms. Asher said.

Leading Australian production company Global Creatures has secured the exclusive rights to develop and stage the original musical adaptation of King Kong, based on the iconic film by Merian C. Cooper.

Ms. Asher said securing the world premiere would generate increased interstate and international visitation to Victoria and provide additional employment opportunities.

“A coup of this size and scale is an appropriate recognition of Melbourne’s world-class creative brand and cultural infrastructure.” Ms. Asher said.

Ms. Asher said it was Melbourne’s cultural vibrancy that contributed to the city’s recent number one ranking by the Economist Intelligence Unit survey as the world’s most liveable city.

“As Minister also responsible for the state’s film and innovation industries, I am thrilled with the opportunities the project will bring to Melbourne’s creative practitioners, as King Kong will also build on the state’s reputation as a powerhouse in technical innovation.” Ms. Asher
said.

Set in 1933 in New York City at the height of the Depression, King Kong will feature a cast of more than 40 actors, singers, dancers and puppeteers.

Pre-production is currently underway, including tests of a seven-metre animatronics creature in Melbourne.

Ms. Asher said Tourism Victoria would work with Global Creatures to implement a comprehensive national and international marketing campaign to maintain Victoria’s lead as a major events destination.
