There will be two new faces at the Magistrates Court of Western Australia and Children’s Court of WA from today (July 6), following the appointments of Raelene Johnston and Adam Hills-Wright as magistrates.

Acting Attorney General Albert Jacob said the appointments would fill the recent retirements and resignations of several magistrates from the court.

Ms. Johnston began her legal career in 1996 as an articled clerk for Bayly and O’Brien and became a barrister and solicitor at the firm a year later.

She joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for Western Australia (ODPP) in 1999 as a State prosecutor and was promoted to practice manager in 2006, a position she has held for 10 years.

Mr. Hills-Wright began his legal career in 2001 as a prosecutor at the ODPP, later becoming an acting senior State prosecutor in 2007.

From 2010 to 2014, Mr. Hills-Wright was a sole practitioner before joining Albert Wolff Chambers as a barrister from 2014 to 2015. He returned to his role as an acting senior State prosecutor at the ODPP in 2015.

In other appointments, Justice Michael Buss QC will take over from retiring Justice Carmel McLure QC as the President of the Court of Appeal. Justice Buss has been a judge of the Supreme and Appeal courts since 2006.
